What is HX711?

HX711 is a precision 24-bit analog-to-digital converter  (ADC) designed for weighing scales and industrial control applications to interface directly with a bridge sensor.

It's designed specifically for boosting cell signals and reporting them to another microcontroller.

Grove – ADC  for  Load Cell  (HX711) is a 24-bit A/D converter specifically intended for load cells. It has a low-noise programmable amplifier on-chip with gain options of 32, 64, and 128.

The HX711 chip combines a regulated power supply, an on-chip clock oscillator, and various peripheral circuits for high integration, fast response, and good anti-interference performance.

With the Grove I2C connector and 4-pin screw terminal, it becomes quite easy to connect the load cell and microcontroller.  no soldering is required. You can build your own Arduino weigh sensor system in just a few simple steps.

  • Voltage - Supply

Voltage - Supply refers to the range of voltage levels that an electronic component or circuit is designed to operate with. It indicates the minimum and maximum supply voltage that can be applied for the device to function properly. Providing supply voltages outside this range can lead to malfunction, damage, or reduced performance. This parameter is critical for ensuring compatibility between different components in a circuit.

  • Input Type

Input type in electronic components refers to the classification of the signal or data that a component can accept for processing or conversion. It indicates whether the input is analog, digital, or a specific format such as TTL or CMOS. Understanding input type is crucial for ensuring compatibility between different electronic devices and circuits, as it determines how signals are interpreted and interacted with.

  • Sampling Rate (Per Second)

The sampling rate (per second) in electronic components refers to the frequency at which an analog signal is measured or sampled to convert it into a digital signal. It is typically expressed in Hertz (Hz) and indicates how many times per second the analog signal is sampled. A higher sampling rate allows for better representation of the original signal, capturing more detail and reducing distortion during the conversion process. In audio applications, for example, common sampling rates include 44.1 kHz for CD-quality audio and 48 kHz for video production.

What is Load Cell / Weight Sensor?

A load cell is a device that measures the size of a load (either a force or a weight) and converts the force into a measured electrical output.

They serve a variety of functions, including determining the weight of an object, tracking weight changes over time, and measuring strain and load on a surface.

When a force is applied to a load cell, it transforms into a metal core with a set of electrical resistances. However, once the force is released, it reverts to its previous state. The reversibility of this substance determines the load cell's quality and accuracy.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does HX711 work?

HX711 is an electronic scale module, whose working principle is to convert the measured changes in resistance value changes, through the conversion circuit into electrical output. The module communicates with the host computer through TTL RS232.

How accurate is HX711?

The HX711 amplifier sensor includes an HX711 chip with analog-to-digital conversion capability in 24-bit accuracy.

What is the HX711 output?

HX711 is an ADC chip with a preamplifier included. The chip is specifically designed for weight scales applications.

How does a HX711 load cell works?

HX711 is a 24bit ADC, which amplifies and digitally converts the Load cell output. Then this amplified value is fed to the Arduino. Now Arduino calculates the output of HX711 converts that into the weight values in grams and shows it on LCD. A push-button is used for calibrating the system.

What is HX711 module?

The HX711 module is a Load Cell Amplifier breakout board for the HX711 IC that allows you to easily read load cells to measure weight.

What is the voltage of HX711?

2.6V~5.5V
