How to Use HC-SR501

The HC-SR501 can be used as a stand-alone unit for most applications. The output signal can be used to control relays and LEDs. The HC SR501 module has the advantage of being a full ready-to-use module that does not require any extra components or platforms, such as an Arduino board or a Raspberry Pi board. You can use it on its own to detect motion using PIR sensors. Simply add power to the module and connect your device to the output and ground pins to use it independently. One thing to keep in mind is that because this PIR motion detector module is a low-current device, it cannot control high-current devices directly. You must utilize a transistor at the output of the PIR module to drive a high current module, and then you will be able to drive that high current device.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is HC-SR501 used for?

The HC-SR501 PIR motion sensor is built around the BISS0001 Micro Power PIR Motion Detector IC. This IC is specifically developed to process the signal from PIR motion sensors. If you remove the Fresnel lens, you will see the RE200B pyroelectric sensing element.

How does HC-SR501 work?

HC-SR501 is a motion detector sensor, which uses infrared waves for the detection of an object. It is an automatic control device; also has large sensitivity and high reliability. It is used in auto-sensing control devices, where we need to perform motion detection.

What is the range of HC-SR501?

The HC-SR501 has a maximum sensing distance (detection range) of 7 meters. You can adjust the sensing distance by rotating the sensitivity potentiometer CW or CCW.

How do I connect HC-SR501 to Raspberry Pi?

Connect the 40 pin cable on the GPIO pins of your Pi (if necessary, remove the cover of your Pi first)
Plug the cobbler onto the breadboard as shown in the figure above or below.
Plug the other end of the 40 pin cable in the T-cobbler.
Connect the VCC pin of the sensor with a 5V pin (red wire)
