CR2450 vs. CR2032: Are they interchangeable?
BATTERY LITHIUM 3V COIN 24.5MM
According to the COMSAN battery standard, the sizes of the CR2450 and CR2032 are different. CR refers to lithium manganese round batteries, 2032 means 20 mm in diameter and 3.2 mm in thickness, and 2450 means 24 mm in diameter and 5 mm in thickness. Although they are both lithium batteries, can they be interchangeable? In this article, we will discuss whether CR2450 and CR2032 are interchangeable.

CR2450 vs CR2032 – What is the Difference between These Batteries
Quick answer
CR2450 and CR2032 are not interchangeable by default. Both are 3 V lithium/manganese-dioxide coin cells, but the CR2450 is wider and thicker, so the holder, enclosure, contact pressure, and device instructions must support the exact cell size.
CR2450 vs CR2032 at a glance
The table below compares standard Panasonic CR-series cells from datasheets dated February 2026. Keeping the manufacturer and product family consistent makes the dimensional and capacity comparison meaningful.
| Parameter | CR2450 | CR2032 | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|---|
| Nominal voltage | 3 V | 3 V | The supply voltage is the same, but voltage alone does not determine fit or performance. |
| Nominal capacity | 620 mAh | 225 mAh | Capacity influences potential service time under the stated application conditions. |
| Listed continuous drain | 0.2 mA | 0.2 mA | This is a datasheet operating reference, not a universal maximum current rating. |
| Maximum diameter | 24.5 mm | 20.0 mm | The holder and enclosure must accept the cell diameter. |
| Maximum height | 5.0 mm | 3.2 mm | Cell height affects cover clearance and contact compression. |
| Approximate weight, without tabs | 6.2 g | 2.8 g | Mass can matter in compact or vibration-sensitive products. |
| Operating temperature | -30 to +85 deg C | -30 to +85 deg C | Panasonic asks users to consult the company for operation at 70 deg C or above. |
The cells are not a drop-in replacement for each other. Verify the holder drawing and enclosure dimensions: the 4.5 mm diameter difference and 1.8 mm height difference can change fit, contact force, and enclosure clearance.
What each battery is designed to provide
CR2450 and CR2032 are primary lithium coin cells based on lithium/manganese-dioxide chemistry. Their compact shape suits low-power electronics, but the two sizes target different mechanical envelopes and energy requirements.
In the Panasonic comparison above, the CR2450 has about 2.8 times the nominal capacity of the CR2032: 620 mAh versus 225 mAh. That ratio is useful for understanding the size of the capacity difference, but it is not a prediction that a device will run 2.8 times longer. Actual service depends on the load, pulse pattern, cutoff voltage, temperature, storage history, and the selected manufacturer's discharge curves.
Why the physical size decides fit first
A coin-cell holder is a mechanical and electrical interface. Its side walls locate the cell, its spring contacts maintain pressure, and its cover limits vertical movement. The CR2450's larger diameter and height can prevent insertion into a CR2032 holder or overstress a cover designed around the thinner cell.
The reverse direction creates a different problem. A smaller CR2032 can lack side support or contact compression in a holder intended for a CR2450. Intermittent contact may appear only when the device is moved, dropped, or exposed to vibration, so a brief power-on check is not enough to qualify the fit.
Adapters, foil, stacked cells, bent contacts, or forced covers are poor fixes. They can introduce unstable contact pressure, short-circuit risk, reversed polarity, or mechanical damage. Use a holder and enclosure designed for the specified cell.
Capacity, load, and runtime
Nominal capacity is measured under defined manufacturer conditions. For example, Energizer rates its CR2450 at a typical 620 mAh to a 2.0 V cutoff with a 7.5 kohm load at 21 deg C. Change the load, cutoff, temperature, or pulse profile and the delivered capacity can change.
For a sensor, remote, meter, or memory-backup circuit, review more than the mAh figure:
Average current: determines the long-term energy demand.
Pulse current and duration: radio transmitters, buzzers, and motors can create short high-current events.
Minimum operating voltage: the product may stop before the cell reaches the datasheet cutoff voltage.
Temperature: affects voltage under load and available capacity.
Holder resistance: weak or contaminated contacts add voltage drop.
Use the discharge curves for the exact manufacturer part when runtime or pulse performance matters. A capacity number from one brand should not be combined with the dimensions, temperature range, or discharge curve of another brand as if they described one cell.
CR2450 equivalent and cross-reference codes
Energizer's official 2450 product page lists 5029LC, CR2450, DL2450, and ECR2450 for its 2450 lithium coin product. Its datasheet also identifies ANSI/NEDA 5029LC and IEC CR2450. These codes are useful when searching distributor catalogs or checking package markings.
Before ordering, verify all of the following against the device instructions and the selected battery datasheet:
IEC or manufacturer designation
Maximum diameter and height
Nominal voltage and chemistry
Polarity and terminal arrangement
Discharge and temperature requirements
Whether the part has tabs or lead wires
A tabbed CR2450 assembly can have the same underlying cell size while presenting a different mechanical interface and ordering code. Check the complete part drawing rather than relying on the base cell number.
Selection checklist
Use this sequence before installing or purchasing a coin cell:
Read the device documentation. Use the cell code specified by the equipment manufacturer.
Inspect the existing cell. Confirm the full marking, polarity, and whether tabs or wires are attached.
Check the holder. Verify diameter, height, cover clearance, and contact condition.
Compare the datasheets. Keep voltage, chemistry, dimensions, load profile, cutoff voltage, and temperature range together.
Install without force. The cover should close normally and the cell should remain secure.
Test under normal operation. Include the product's highest-load function, not only standby mode.
Safety and handling
CR2450 and CR2032 cells are small enough to be swallowed and can cause severe internal injury. Keep new and used cells in secure packaging and away from children. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission advises immediate medical attention if a button or coin cell is swallowed; the National Capital Poison Center says not to induce vomiting. Contact local emergency services or a poison center immediately for instructions.
Do not charge, crush, disassemble, short-circuit, or expose a primary lithium coin cell to fire or high temperatures. When removing a used cell, cover its terminals with non-conductive tape and take it to an appropriate battery collection location according to local rules.
FAQ
Can a CR2450 replace a CR2032?
No. A CR2450 is not a replacement for a CR2032 unless the device manufacturer explicitly documents both sizes and the holder is engineered for each one. The CR2450 is larger in diameter and height.
Can a CR2032 work in a device marked CR2450?
Use it only when the device documentation explicitly lists CR2032 and the holder maintains secure, correctly polarized contact. A power-on test cannot confirm mechanical reliability or expected service life.
Why does CR2450 usually have more capacity?
Its larger physical volume allows the manufacturer to package more active material. In the cited Panasonic standard-cell datasheets, nominal capacity is 620 mAh for CR2450 and 225 mAh for CR2032. Delivered capacity still depends on the application conditions.
Are CR2450 and CR2032 rechargeable?
The cells covered here are primary lithium coin cells. Energizer's CR2032 safety notice says not to charge the cell. Use only a battery chemistry and charging method specifically designed and documented for a rechargeable system.
What should I do if a coin cell is swallowed?
Seek emergency medical help immediately and contact a poison center. Do not induce vomiting. Follow the current instructions from the emergency service or poison-control specialist.

Is CR2450 an alternative to CR2032 battery?
The CR2450 battery relies on the same storage technology as the CR2032 type. Therefore the energy density is the same, but the CR2450 cell provides more capacity due to its larger size. The capacity also varies depending on the manufacturer and lays around 620 mAh.
What is CR2450 used for?
The Lithium Coin CR2450 batteries have certain accomplishments for applications where traditional batteries cannot be used. Use them for calculators, digital watches, laser pens, car keys, medical devices like a clinical thermometer and a tensiometer, and fitness appliances.
What battery can replace 2450?
CR2450 vs. 3.0V rechargeable LiR2450 batteries can be used as a direct replacement for CR2450 batteries since they feature the same (similar) output voltage that never exceeds 3.0 volts and pose no threat for sensitive electronics.
Are 2450 and 2430 batteries the same?
CR2430 coin cell batteries are known for being slightly wider than their CR2025 and CR2032 counterparts. Security sensors that use coin batteries like the CR2430 are usually small and unobtrusive. But since the CR2430 batteries are wider, they cannot be used interchangeably with CR2025 and CR2032 batteries.
Will a CR2025 work for a CR2032?
For as long as either fit in the battery compartment, the CR2025 and CR2032 may be used interchangeably with minimal effect although the CR2032 would probably last slightly longer simply because it has a higher capacity (mAh).
