1N4148 and 1N4001 are all semiconductors. This article is going to talk about the detailed information about the 2N4401 and 2N3904, and interpret the difference between them.

This video demonstrates detailed information about 1N4148 and 1N4001.

Can I use 1N4148 diodes instead of a 1N4001 diode for reducing the speed of a 5V 1.8W fan?

Overview of 1N4148

A diode is a semiconductor device that allows just one direction of electricity to flow. The current has to flow from the anode to the cathode at all times. The cathode terminal can be identified by a grey bar, as shown in the image above.
The 1N4148 Diode has a maximum current carrying capacity of 300mA  and can withstand peaks of up to 2A. This diode is used in applications that demand fast switching because of its fast recovery time of 8ns at a forward current of 10mA.

Overview of 1N4001

The classic 1N4001   power blocking diode is offered in a ten-pack. These can be used for reverse polarity protection (place it between your DC  power jack and circuitry to protect your sensitive electronics from a negative voltage), kickback protection (place it across your solenoids, relays, and DC  motors to safely discharge the spikes generated by the coils), general rectification, and more!
These diodes have a typical voltage drop of around 0.7V and can safely pass 1A continuous current. They also protect against up to 50V reverse voltage. Check out the datasheet for more details!

Conclusion: 1N4148 vs 1N4001

Either of those diodes should work, but the 1N4001  is a better choice because it is the "bigger" device: the 4001 is a 1 amp rectifier, whereas the 4148 is a 100mA little signal device. For small relays, it's fine. 1n4148  is another option. Because the LED begins to conduct considerably earlier than the critical voltage, the critical voltage can never be attained. The 4148 is a diode with a quick recovery time. For logic speed signals, this is useful. A general-purpose diode is the other. The solution, as always, is dependent on your application. The answer is no if you require a large amount of current. The answer is yes if you're using it for battery DC blocking.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the 1N4148 diode used for?

Because the 1N4148 diode is primarily utilized for rapid switching, it is referred to as a switching diode. These diodes provide the same functions as a standard switch. Under a fixed voltage, these diodes have high resistance, but a low resistance above the fixed voltage.

What is 1N4001 diode used for?

The general-purpose 1N4001 diodes can be used in a range of applications. Current can only travel in one way through diodes (anode to cathode). These diodes are commonly used to correct voltage but can also be used to defend against reverse polarity voltage. With a maximum surge of 30 amps, a 1-amp forward current is possible.

Can I use 1N4007 instead of 1N4001?

Yes. The 1N4007 can withstand a higher reverse voltage(Vr), 1000V vs. 50V. The 1N4007 may even be a better choice, esp.

What are the operature temperature of 1N4148 and 1N4001 respectively?

1N4148 is -65°C~175°C, while the 1N4001 is -55°C~150°C.

What is the breakdown voltage of 1N4001 diode?

At 50 volts or below, some diodes, such as the 1N4001, will fail. The 1N4007, on the other hand, can withstand 1000 volts of peak repeated reverse voltage.
