HOLSTER INFRARED THERMOMETER

It is impossible to use any size for a replacement battery. You can't get the best battery performance if you don't use the appropriate side of the battery. So, are H6 and H7 batteries similar or interchangeable? Both have the same width and height but the length is different. H6 and H7 batteries are more powerful and suitable for most car battery trays. This article will give you a brief comparison of H6 vs H7.

This video is about teaching us how to choose a right car battery.

Need a New Car Battery? How to Choose the Right Type.

H6 Batteries

h6.jpg

H6 batteries, also known as group 48, L3, and 66L3 batteries, are widely used in the maritime, automotive, and light industries. Also ideal for use as a starting or dual-purpose battery in a variety of electric and electronic devices. H6 batteries are modern AGM batteries that are maintenance-free, spill-proof, mechanically shock-resistant, and vibration-resistant.

The physical dimensions of typical H6 batteries are 278 x 175 x 190 mm, which are similar to the standard DIN H6 and EN 66L3 batteries.

H7 Batteries

h7.jpg

H7 batteries can be found in a wide range of vehicles, from cars to light trucks. These batteries come in two types: starting/cranking and dual-purpose.

They're extremely similar to Group 94R batteries, however, they're referred to as L4 and LN4 batteries. A Group 94R battery can be used in the same way as the H7 battery. The physical measurements of the H7 are 315 x 175 x 190 mm (L x W x H). 12 3/8 x 6 7/8 x 7 1/2 inches (315 x 175 x 190 mm) are the dimensions of BCI Group 94R batteries. As a result, H7 and BCI Group 94R batteries can be swapped out.

H6 vs H7: Difference in Physical Size

According to the DIN part number system, H6, and H7 battery dimensions are (L x W x H):

- H6 battery: 278 x 175 x 190 mm,

- H7 battery: 315 x 175 x 190 mm.

As one can see, H6 and H7 batteries feature exactly the same width (175 mm, 6.89 inches) and height (190 mm, 7.48 inches), but they differ in length by 37 mm (1.47 inches) - H7 batteries are longer, and thus feature larger volume and hence better performances in terms of capacity, cranking Amps, and Reserve Capacity (RC). Also, H7 batteries tend to be heavier.

H6 and H7 batteries have several equivalent sizes according to the BCI standard:

- H6 battery (278 x 175 x 190 mm) -> BCI Group 48 (12 1/16 x 6 7/8 x 7 9/16 inches, 306 x 175 x 192 mm) and BCI Group 98R (11 3/16 x 6 7/8 x 7 1/2 inches, 283 x 175 x 190 mm),

- H7 battery (315 x 175 x 190 mm) -> BCI Group 94R (12 3/8 x 6 7/8 x 7 1/2 inches, 315 x 175 x 190 mm).

As one can see, H7 and BCI Group 94R batteries have practically exactly the same dimensions (12 3/8 x 6 7/8 x 7 1/2 inches, 315 x 175 x 190 mm) and can be used interchangeably.

H6 vs H7: Difference in Reserve Capacity(RC)

The reserve capacity is one of the most important factors to consider when comparing H6 and H7 batteries. If your battery does not charge via the alternator, RC can help you count how many times it has been used. This refers to how long a battery may last. The standard constant amps in this situation are 25 before going past the minimum voltage. The better the RC values, the bigger the battery. As a result, H7 may be slightly more expensive than H6, yet it is vital to examine the battery and internal component quality.

H6 vs H7: Difference in Cold Cranking Amps (CCA)

The ability of a battery to start an engine in cold temperatures is measured by its CCA. It shows how many amps a battery can supply for 30 seconds at 0 degrees Fahrenheit.

The general thing, if your battery is larger, the CCA value is better. In this case, the H6 battery is quite shorter than the H7 battery. So, H7 can be better. Battery technology is also crucial to justify the quality.

As stated below, this has an impact on the battery's pricing.

H6 vs H7: Difference in Prices

Price is dependent on the battery quality and brands. H6 and H7 batteries come in several brands along with multiple prices. Remember, you can find an H6 battery at a cheap price. Depending on size, power, and quality, prices for average H6 and H7 batteries range from about $45 to $250.

H6 vs H7: Comparison Chart

Batteries in the H6, H7, group 48, and group 94R series are commonly used in automotive and light industrial applications. They can be dual-purpose or starting/cranking batteries. Here's a table that compares H6 with H7 batteries.

First, we'll look at some common H6 or Group 48 batteries and their key properties.

If you wish to upgrade your battery, say to boost the CCA value, make sure it will fit. Hopefully, our quick guide has inspired you to upgrade your H series batteries.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I Use An H7 Battery Instead of An H6?

An H7 battery is relatively similar except for its physical size. You can use an H7 battery instead of an H6 depending on the space. Remember that the H6 battery is weaker.

What Does H6 Mean on A Battery?

H6 indicates the DIN battery size. It is also known as a group 48 battery. This battery is great for your automobile industry. For example, the H6 OPTIMA battery comes with 800 cold cranking and good capacity.

How many years do car batteries last?

On average, a car battery lasts between two and five years. If you live in the northern United States, your car battery lifespan will be longer, because you're in a cold climate.

What is a group 47 battery?

Group 47 batteries are 9.7" (Length) x 6.9" (Width) x 7.5" (Height). The positive terminal is on the right side of the battery. The terminal type is post. Typical cold-cranking amps range between 290A and 650A while reserve capacity ranges between 75 and 110 minutes.

What are car battery groups?

A battery group size is an industry-standard for car batteries that indicates the actual, physical size of a car battery (height x width x length), as well as the polarity (where the positive and negative battery posts are located on the battery).
