Introduction
Electronic devices are only functional today because they are fuelled by battery cells. While there are other sorts of batteries, the non-rechargeable tiny BIOS battery, also known as Button or Coin Cell Batteries, is the most recent development. You wouldn't expect small electronic devices or a computer system to work on AA batteries all of the time; sometimes a coin cell is required.
There are many different types of button cell batteries, depending on a variety of criteria; however, some of the most prevalent include Cr2016 and Cr2025.
What is CR2016 Battery?
The CR2016 is a tiny battery that may be used in a variety of electronic devices. It may be used to replace many brands of timepieces, as well as deliver high energy for calculators, PDA devices, medical devices, toys, and other electronic devices.
What is CR2025 Battery?
A CR2025 battery is a non-rechargeable (primary) lithium coin or “button” cell that is 20mm in diameter x 2.5mm in thickness. The CR2025 battery has a high voltage of 3V, and a capacity of up to 170mAh, depending on manufacturer specifications.
CR2016 vs. CR2025: Similarities
The first similarity is in the naming scheme for the batteries, and a short explanation will show you why.
CR: The letter C denotes that the battery has a Lithium Manganese Dioxide chemical composition. The letter R denotes the shape of the battery, which is round in this case.
First two digits: The first two numbers in the battery code indicate the battery’s diameter in millimeters. Both of these batteries are 20 mm in diameter.
Second two digits: The second two numbers in the battery code indicate the thickness of the battery. The CR 2016 is 1.6 mm thick, while the CR 2025 is 2.5 mm thick.

What more ways do CR2016 and CR2025 have in common?
Usage: These two types of batteries are utilized in a wide range of small devices, including automotive remote key fobs, laser pens, children's toys, and much more.
Voltage: Two batteries have a voltage of 3 volts. They could theoretically all be used interchangeably, but we'll get to that later.
Diameter: Two batteries are 20 mm in diameter, as stated by the battery code.
Chemistry: Two batteries have the same Lithium Manganese chemical makeup.
CR2016 vs. CR2025 Battery: Differences in Thickness

What differentiates most button batteries is their thickness or diameter.
For a typical CR series battery, you can get the thickness of the battery from the last two digits of the name in a tenth of a millimeter.
CR2025
The CR2025 battery has a thickness of 2.5 mm.
CR2016
The Thickness of a CR2016 battery is 1.6 mm.
CR2016 vs. CR2025 Battery: Differences in Capacity
The number of charges a button or coin cell battery can contain is indicated by its capacity.
The larger the button battery's capacity, the longer the battery will endure. The amount of active material in the button cell determines the battery's capacity.
CR2025
The CR2025 has a capacity of 165 mAh. This figure is a measure of electric power over time. Most portable electronic devices that use this type of battery require very little electrical power to work.
So assuming you’re using this battery on a device that requires 5mA, this battery will last for over 33 hours, that’s over one and a half days.
CR2016
The CR2016 has a battery capacity of 90 mAh. When you make use of this battery on a device that requires 5 mAh, the battery will last for 18 hours, so less than a day.
CR2016 vs. CR2025 Battery: Differences in uses
In terms of applications, CR2025 is most commonly found in wristwatches, pocket calculators, and other similar devices. Simple goods like pens, car keys, fitness appliances, and medical devices like thermometers frequently use the CR2016 battery model. One less common application is as a memory backup power source, as its size is ideal.
CR2016 vs. CR2025 Battery: Differences in Rechargeability
What appears to be a commonality but is actually a distinction between Cr2016 and Cr2025 is their rechargeability. Recharging a battery usually entails allowing electric currents to pass through it in order to restore its performance. Unfortunately, both the Cr2016 and Cr2025 batteries are non-rechargeable. They're designed to be thrown away once they've been used.
Even though the technique is not safe, there are battery chargers that can be used to recharge non-rechargeable batteries. In that instance, the Cr2025 battery has better recharge potential than the Cr2016 battery.
CR2016 and CR2025 Battery: Equivalents
The CR2025 and CR2016 button batteries can be replaced with other types of batteries depending on a variety of circumstances. The chemistry of the buttons, the voltage, and the size of the buttons are all elements to consider (thickness and diameter). The following are various companies' CR2025 and CR2016 battery equivalents.
CR2025
CR2016 battery is interchangeable and can replace a CR2025 battery as long as it fits in your device. Otherwise, both of them are 20 mm thick and have the same voltage.
The direct equivalents to CR2025 button batteries by other brands are DL2025 (Duracell), ECR2025 (Energizer), and CR2025 (Kodak, Maxell, Rayovac, Sony).
CR2016
Additionally to the above information, equivalents of CR2016 are DL2016 (Duracell), ECR2106 (Energizer), and CR2016 (Kodak, Maxell, Rayovac, Sony).
Are CR2016 and CR2025 Battery interchangeable?
In theory, the button cell batteries in our comparison evaluation can be used interchangeably.
In actuality, these batteries should not be used interchangeably. What is the reason for this? While two batteries produce the same voltage, not all gadgets are designed to work with batteries with larger (or smaller) capacity. For this reason, manufacturers build their devices' battery chambers to fit a specified-sized battery cell.
Conclusion
Both batteries have the same 20mm diameter and are 3V, so in theory, they are interchangeable.
However, they have different thicknesses. The CR2016 is 1.6 mm thick and the CR2025 is 2.5 mm thick.
The increased thickness of the CR2025 would prevent it from seating properly and therefore would not be a suitable replacement.
We hope that this has been an informative read.
What are CR-Series Batteries Used For?
Portable electronic devices such as medical equipment (thermometer), wristwatches, pocket calculators, etc., are powered by a special type of battery – button cell batteries. The common types belong to the CR-series. The “CR” is a generic description that the battery contains Lithium Ion to power such a device over a period.
What Brand Makes the Best Cr2025 Battery?
A few brands have contributed to small LED lights with this battery, and invested much in packaging design; therefore, it would be great to patronize them. These brands include Duracell, Chao Chuang, Philips Lithium Minicell, GloFX Lithium Button, etc.
What Brand Makes the Best Cr2016 Battery?
Some brands are highly recommended if you need this type of button cell battery. These brands include; Duracell, Energizer, Maxwell, Panasonic, Varta, etc. Each of them promises temperature resistance with continuous voltage over toys, PDA and Medical Devices.
Can You Replace Cr2016 with Cr2025 and Vice-Versa?
If you are thinking of replacing Cr2016 with Cr2025, it is possible but it has a lower charge compared to the other. On the other hand, the Cr2025 battery has a higher charge and lasts longer as a replacement.
Could you stack two CR2016 to replace one CR2032?
By stacking two CR2016 coin cell batteries to replace a single CR2032 coin cell battery, one can get the same capacity and endurance as a single CR2032. This stacking of two CR2016 batteries, on the other hand, will have serious consequences for the device you're powering.
