An Overview of TP5000

The TP5000 is a buck-type lithium manganese battery/lithium iron phosphate battery charge management chip with a single switch. Its QFN16 closing is ultra-compact. It is equipped with a simple peripheral circuit, making it perfect for TP5000  large current charging management applications for portable devices. Meanwhile, the TP5000  has input overcurrent, under-voltage, over-temperature, and short circuit.  battery temperature monitoring, and reverse battery protection built-in.

TP5000 has a wide input voltage, trickle charge the battery into the pre-charge, constant current.  constant voltage three-phase trickle precharge Current, constant charging current can be adjusted by an external resistor, the maximum charging current up to 2A.

How to use TP5000?

The majority of these functions are handled by the TP5000  integrated battery charging IC. It's built on a switching buck converter, which means it can withstand greater currents while remaining efficient and without overheating like a linear IC. The 800kHz switching frequency allows for the use of a very small inductor, ranging from 2.2uH to 10uH.

TP5000 Applications Circuit

Both lithium-ion and lithium iron phosphate batteries can be charged with this IC. They have varying nominal voltages and, as a result, varying voltage requirements. This can be explained by correctly pushing pin CS. If li-po charging is desired, an open-drain output can be used to pull the pin low directly. A 10K resistor should be inserted between VIN and CS if li-fe-po charging is necessary.

The value of the shunt resistor linked between VS and BAT is used to set the charging current,  The needed shunt resistance is 0.1V/Iout since the current limit threshold is 100mV. A shunt resistance of 50m is required for a maximum output of 2A. A trickle charge is a percentage of the charging current at its maximum. When the RTRICK pin is shorted to the ground, the trickle current is set to 10% of the charging current.  and when it is left floating, it is set to 100%. It was set to 50% by 320K.

The STDBY and CHRG pins can be used to connect LEDs. A green LED is recommended for STDBY and a red LED is recommended for CHRG, according to the datasheet. The battery is charging when the red LED illuminates. The battery is fully charged when the green LED illuminates. When both LEDs are lit, it means there is a problem, such as overheating or under voltage. There was no battery detected when the LEDs alternately flashed.

The TS pin is meant to be connected to a voltage divider, the bottom leg of which is an NTC. The threshold is set to 80% of VIN, so the resistors must be selected accordingly.
